I feel the "bad-guy-changing-history" bit was a good way to justify the new story, rather than just rebooting the whole thing and saying this is the new beginning; it allows for new plots and events while still tieing it to the established series, in a way that actually fits the genre as well. And the plot, it was incredible, an excelent blend of action, drama, suspense, and humor while still(as I'm told) referencing the original series.
Speaking of humor, this flick was freakin' funny! Kirk's smarmy sarcasm and cocy attitude complimented Spock's blatant observations and reserved composure in spades. There were so many great one-liners too, I can garuntee people are gonna be saying "are you out of your vulcan mind?" real soon. Was the original series this funny? Have I been missing out on a comedy gold mine this long?
There were a few things I felt were odd though:
-Why did the big red thing go after Kirk even though it had just killed larger prey?
-Why did Kirk not shoot Nero the moment he saw him like he did to all the other bad aliens?
-If the Vulcans are a race without emotions, why were they clearly annoyed at Spock and scared at the invasion?
Minor details aside, it was a great movie, made far better by the fact that I got to see it with freinds whom I hadn't seen in about a year. I originally wasn't going to see the film at all, but ~kire468 told me he and some of our other high school chums were going to see it and invited me along. Seeing them again after so long was great, especially making Kire lose the game. He was so hyped up when the movie ended, talking about how cool it was, and I said "I bet it makes you feel better 'bout losing the game." It didn't, quite the opposite actually. His reaction was epic, I will remember it 'til the dy I die, he probably will too. To top it all off, I even made a new friend, not a bad way to spend a sunday if I do say so myself.
